Nominations open for fifth Canadian Environment Awards
The Canadian Environment Awards is inviting nominations by December 9, 2005, for its flagship program, the fifth annual Community Awards. Sponsored by Shell Canada, the Community Awards honour community-based projects and programs in in six categories of environmental excellence: Climate Change; Conservation; Environmental Health; Environmental Learning; Restoration and Rehabilitation; and Sustainable Living.
Following the close of nominations on December 9, 2005, a panel of judges representing the geographic diversity of Canada will choose three candidates in each category as finalists. Since 2002, more than 400 projects and programs have been nominated for recognition and 80 have advanced as finalists.
The Canadian Environment Awards also recognize environmental achievement through the Citation of Lifetime Achievement and The Green Team Challenge, which is the youth initiative. To mark the fifth anniversary, the Ideas for Life Award, has been added to the program as a new honour in 2006. It celebrates efforts in the arts, entertainment and design that increase awareness of Canada's environment.
The Gold and Silver Award winners will be announced in Vancouver next June, during Canada's Environment Week. Gold Award winners will receive $5,000, and for the first time, all Silver Award winners will receive a cash prize of $2,500. All winners will donate the prize money to the environmental cause of their choice. Recipients of the Citation of Lifetime Achievement and the Ideas for Life Award will be named in early March 2006.
The Canadian Environment Awards was established in 2002 by Canadian Geographic Enterprises with the support of the federal government and private-sector companies. In addition to Shell Canada, corporate sponsors include Hewlett-Packard (Canada), which sponsors the Citation of Lifetime Achievement.
