Green Space Advisory Committee members appointed
The federal government has named 11 members to the Green Space Stewardship Advisory Committee (GSSAC) which will be responsible for developing a vision for the federally-owned Green Space Lands. Under the leadership of Transport Canada, the committee will also help develop the Green Space Master Plan for long-term protection of the federally owned portion of the Oak Ridges Moraine and areas around the Rouge Park as Green Space in perpetuity.
While the advisory committee will play a key role in Green Space planning activities, Transport Minister David Collenette also noted that "participation by other advocacy groups, as well as local, regional, and provincial governments in the Sub-Committees will be key to developing a Green Space Master Plan."
The Green Space Stewardship Advisory Committee is a component of the Green Space Strategy announced by Collenette on May 24, 2002 (ELW June 3). The Strategy's other two components include protection through continued federal ownership, and a series of guiding principles under which the lands will be managed and protected in perpetuity. These principles will be embodied in the Master Plan to be developed over the next 12 months with the committee's assistance.
The GSSAC's newly-appointed members represent diverse relevant sectors and interests. They include: Brian Buckles, of the Green Door Alliance, a non-governmental organization; Ron Christie, formerly with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and currently head of the Rouge Park Alliance; Lilli Duoba, manager of environmental planning and Rouge Park for the town of Markham; Alex Georgieff, commissioner of planning for Durham Region; Alex Grant, chief administrative officer (CAO) for the town of Uxbridge; Craig Mather, CAO of Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA); Tom Melymuk, division head, corporate projects and policy with the city of Pickering; Bruce Moran of the Green Space Tenant Representatives, another NGO; Don Prince, founding director of, and currently chief land securement officer for, the Oak Ridges Moraine Land Trust; and John Waller, director of long-range strategic planning for the Region of York.
