Green Municipal Funds support 14 new projects in BC
British Columbia municipal governments and their partners will receive over $5.2 million in funding from the Green Municipal Funds (GMF) for initiatives to increase energy efficiency, protect the environment and improve municipal services.
The funds will be directed to 14 innovative studies and projects in 11 communities. These new projects will in turn leverage $15.6 million, through participating municipal governments and their partners, to deal with municipal environmental management issues in BC.
Four of the projects are being funded by the Green Municipal Investment Fund (GMIF), is helping to finance landfill gas utilization projects for the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George, the Regional District of Nanaimo and Maxim Power Corporation in partnership with the City of Vancouver. The projects will cut greenhouse gas emissions and produce landfill gas for a variety of potential uses including electrical power generation.
GMIF is also providing funding to the Greater Vancouver Regional District for a water reclamation pilot project at the Annacis Island wastewater treatment plant.
In addition, ten Green Municipal Enabling Fund (GMEF) feasibility studies have been approved. The studies cover community environmental and energy planning, sustainable transportation planning and water distribution system management.
The GMF is administered on behalf of the federal government by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM). Since the inception of GMF, 39 projects have been approved in British Columbia, representing an investment of about $8.3 million and leveraging $31.3 million in total project spending by municipal governments and private sector partners.
Across Canada, the Funds have so far provided more than $20 million for 201 projects, leveraging $79 million in total spending for initiatives related to clean air, water, soil and climate change.
