NEWS SUMMARY: BC agrees to expanded scope of NEB's Sumas II review

VICTORIA, BC-The British Columbia government said this month that it will agree to have the National Energy Board go beyond its normal jurisdiction and consider environmental effects when reviewing the application for a power line in connection with the Sumas II power plant. The NEB is in the process of determining which factors to consider in making its decision on the plant. The BC government has intervenor status at hearings to oppose Sumas II and early this month filed an appeal with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to challenge the air emissions permit authorizing the project. The province will also be asking the NEB to adjourn all further hearings until appeals in the U.S. courts and with the EPA have been heard.
