Clean Harbors Canada fined $42,500 for operating leaking waste transport vehicles

SARNIA, ONT-Clean Harbors Canada recently pleaded guilty to five charges of operating vehicles that were not leakproof and was fined $42,500 plus a victim fine surcharge. The company, operator of a hazardous waste disposal site in Corrunna, near Sarnia, has a fleet of waste transportation vehicles that are authorized to carry waste. Over a five-month period, the Ministry of Environment (MOE) inspected a number of Clean Harbors' waste transportation vehicles, documenting five leaking vehicles on four different dates. After an investigation by the MOE's investigations and enforcement branch, the company was charged with five counts of violating section 16(1) of Regulation 347 under the Environmental Protection Act by operating a waste management system with a vehicle body that was not leakproof.

Clean Harbors was given 60 days to pay the fine and surcharge.
