Ottawa to contribute $12M to Lake Simcoe cleanup

JACKSON'S POINT, ONT-The federal government is providing $12 million over the next two years to support the cleanup of Lake Simcoe. The contribution will be made through the government's $93-million National Water Strategy. Cleanup work will focus on stemming the effects of excessive algae and weed growth that reduce oxygen supply and harm fish and wildlife. Lake Simcoe, north of Toronto, is known for its recreational fishery and supports tourism and agriculture. These activities, along with burgeoning urban development, have placed the region's natural environment has increasingly severe stress in recent years.
