Alcan named first recipient of new Quebec Corporate Citizenship Award
MONTREAL, QUE-Alcan has been named a co-recipient of the first-ever Quebec Corporate Citizenship Award (Prix QuÈbÈcois de l'Entreprise Citoyenne). The company is being recognized for its innovative aluminum spent potlining recycling plant in the Saguenay region. Spent potlining, a residual material composed of carbon and various elements, is generated during the de-lining of pots following the aluminum smelting process. It is traditionally pre-treated and landfilled under stringent regulatory conditions. The new process to be used at the Alcan facility will recycle all of the company's spent potlining, while providing the global aluminum industry a sustainable means for re-using this industrial material. The new plant, which is expected to be fully operational by mid-2008, will have the capacity to recycle approximately 80 kilotonnes of material per year. The Prix QuÈbÈcois de l'Entreprise Citoyenne was established to recognize the outstanding corporate citizenship efforts of Quebec-based companies. Alcan will share this year's award with the world-renowned Cirque du Soleil.
