BC invites nominations for first-ever Green City Awards
VANCOUVER, BC-The British Columbia government is accepting nominations until June 1, 2007 for the inaugural Green City Awards. The $2.5-million program will recognize local governments that are leading the way in the province to create greener, healthier communities for their citizens. The first winners will be announced at the Union of BC Municipalities annual conference this September. The Green City Awards program will provide up to $500,000 annually over the next five years to municipalities and regional districts that encourage physical activity, energy conservation and environmental benefits through community design and management. Among the selection criteria are: Triple Bottom Line (demonstrating how social, environmental and economic values are integrated in a community's long-term planning); Climate Change (demonstrating active efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate climate change); and Innovation and Transferability (providing examples from which other local governments can learn and measures they can apply in their communities, and serving to showcase BC communities internationally). More information on the Green City Awards program is available on the program Web site, www.greencityawards.gov.bc.ca.
