Five Canadian firms named to Global 100: Most Sustainable Corporations

For the third consecutive year, Sun Life Financial has been named one of the Global 100: Most Sustainable Corporations in the World. The company is one of five Canadian firms on the list, the other four being Alcan, Enbridge, Royal Bank of Canada and Transcanada Corporation.

Sun Life and the Royal Bank were selected from the financials category, while Enbridge and Transcanada were part of the utilities category; Alcan was the sole Canadian listing from the materials category. This year marks Transcanada's first appearance on the Global 100 list.

The Global 100 is a collaborative project initiated in 2005 by Corporate Knights of Canada, publisher of the world's only mainstream corporate responsibility magazine, and Innovest Strategic Value Advisors, a research firm specializing in analyzing extra-financial drivers of risk and shareholder value. The annual list is unveiled each year at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Innovest serves as the exclusive research analytic data provider for the Global 100, compiling and analyzing the data of 1,800 international companies to create the list.

Social, environmental and governance factors are increasingly relevant to financial performance, and those companies that show superior management of these issues are fast gaining an edge over their competitors - an edge Innovest believes will translate into outperformance in the long term.

The Global 100 companies are therefore sustainable in the sense that they have displayed a better ability than most of their industry peers to identify and effectively manage material environmental, social and governance factors impacting the opportunity and risk sides of their business.

Among the other multi-national and other companies on the 2007 Global 100 list are Alcoa (U.S.-materials), Atlas Copco (Sweden-industrials), Google (U.S.-information technology), Unilever (U.K.-consumer staples) and Vestas Windsystems (Denmark-industrials).

More information about the Global 100 is available on the project Web site, www.global100.org.
