Ron Thompson has been appointed interim Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development (CESD) following the abrupt departure of Johanne GÈlinas. Recent press reports claimed she had been dismissed by Auditor General Sheila Fraser, although the official statement said GÈlinas is leaving the position to pursue other opportunities. Thompson has been with the Office of the Auditor General (OAG) since 1977 and has served as an assistant auditor general since 1985. Scheduled to retire, he agreed to stay on as acting CESD until the next Commissioner is named. Auditor General Fraser said she will be reviewing the OAG's environmental and sustainable development audit practices over the next several months and will likely begin the search for a new CESD thereafter. GÈlinas was appointed CESD in August 2000, succeeding the first Commissioner, Brian Emmett, who served from June 1996 to January 2000.
