Oilfield waste facility explosion, fire under investigation by EUB

CALGARY, ALTA- Field staff from the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board (EUB) are investigating an explosion that occurred December 7 at an oilfield waste disposal facility operated by Deepwell Energy Services near Grande Cache. The explosion and subsequent fire occurred around 3 p.m. when a vacuum truck was unloading fluid into a tank at the facility. By 8:30 that evening, staff from Firemaster Oilfield Services had extinguished the fire. The facility was shut down and isolated and Deepwell's emergency response plan was activated to protect the public, its employees and the environment. In accordance with the plan, emergency services and the appropriate regulatory agencies were notified. Two workers were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The facility does not handle waste from sour gas facilities, no evacuations of the public were necessary, and there were no environmental impacts. There are no residences within five km of the facility. EUB staff, assisted by Deepwell personnel, are investigating the incident, as is standard procedure. More information is available on the Deepwell Web site, www.deepwellenergy.com.
