Swan Hills treatment centre certified to ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001

SWAN HILLS, ALTA-The Swan Hills hazardous waste treatment centre has been certified to the ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 standards for its environmental management systems (EMS). Although the Centre has used many components of ISO and OHSAS for years, its management decided that formalization of ISO and OHSAS environmental management protocols was important for the facility and its customers. ISO 14001 is the International Standards Organization's standard for EMS; OHSAS 18001 is the British Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series counterpart. The Swan Hills facility is owned by the Alberta government and is operated by Earth Tech Canada. As a fully integrated operation, the centre is capable of fully processing all types of hazardous wastes except for pathological, explosive, mercury and radioactive wastes. Since its inception in 1987, the facility has played a principal role in treating hazardous wastes from across Canada including PCB and other hazardous waste compounds. More information is available on the Swan Hills treatment centre Web site, www.shtc.ca or by E-mail, info@shtc.ca.
