Strathcona County awarded Communities in Bloom Environmental Awareness prize
BRANDON, MAN-At the Communities in Bloom national conference in Brandon, Strathcona County was named the 2006 recipient of the Environmental Awareness award. Waste Management of Canada (WM) and Communities in Bloom (CIB) chose the community, located near Edmonton, Alberta, in recognition of its environmental planning initiatives for waste, water reduction and integrated pest management programs. WM created the Environmental Awareness Award in 2004 to recognize communities throughout Canada for outstanding achievements in environmentally responsible practices and sustainability. Criteria for this award include environmental efforts made by municipalities, businesses and citizens of a community in the areas of waste reduction and recycling initiatives and conservation and naturalization projects. WM is also a national sponsor of Communities in Bloom, which is marking its twelfth anniversary of national awards ceremonies. "The focus of the sponsors and organizers of Communities in Bloom is to ensure environmental responsibility is extended beyond the boundaries of participating city, town, village and rural areas," said CIB national President Raymond Carriere. CIB is a Canadian non-profit organization dedicated to fostering civic pride, environmental responsibility and beautification through community participation and national competitions.
