Ottawa names expert panel to review options for creating safe drinking water regulatory framework for First Nations
OTTAWA, ONT-A panel of highly experienced and qualified experts will examine and make recommendations concerning options for the establishment of a regulatory framework to ensure safe drinking water in First Nations communities. The panel will be headed by Harry Swain, with the other two members including First Nations Grand Chief Stan Louttit and Dr. Steve Hrudey. The expert panel will submit an options paperby the end of August to federal Minister of Indian and Northern Affairs Jim Prentice and Assembly of First Nations National Chief Phil Fontaine. A report of the findings will be made public in September 2006. The creation of the panel was announced by Prentice and Fontaine, along with Environment Minister Rona Ambrose and Health Minister Tony Clement.
