Proposed Nfld wind farm to be subject to EIS
ST JOHN'S, NFLD-Environment and Conservation Minister Clyde Jackman has determined that an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) is required for the Argentia wind farm project proposed by Wind Project. The EIS is required to provide sufficient baseline information, through original field data collection, on the distribution, flight patterns of birds and their habitat use in the area proposed for development. An environmental assessment committee will be appointed to provide advice to the minister and to prepare draft guidelines for conducting the EIS. The draft guidelines will be made available for public comment. The wind farm proposal by Wind Project would consist of 14 to 17 wind turbine generators with a total capacity of 25.5 to 42 megawatts (MW), to be located within the town of Placentia on 15 acres of land currently owned by the Argentia Management Authority. The wind turbines are to be between 65 and 80 metres in height, with three-bladed rotors whose diameter will be between 71 and 90 metres. The rated electrical capacity from each turbine will be between 1.5 and 3.0 megawatts. The project also involves the construction of gravel access roads, foundations and turbines with transformers, underground and above ground power cables and lines, a substation and a permanent meteorological tower.
