Dofasco among top winners of Ceres sustainability reporting awards

HAMILTON, ONT-Dofasco was the sole Canadian company among the top five recently named to receive sustainability reporting awards in an international competition hosted by the Boston-based Ceres coalition and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). The Hamilton-based steelmaker received a commendation for continued excellence in integrated reporting. In presenting the award, the judges noted that for the third straight year, Dofasco has taken the unusual step of integrating sustainability reporting into its annual report. This approach reinforces the company's message to its shareholders that sustainability is a core part of its business strategy and that Dofasco deems its social and environmental performance to be as important as its fiscal performance. The report details the company's performance in energy use, air and water quality, waste and secondary materials management. It includes an open letter from community stakeholders as well. Other winners, selected from a record 87 nominations, included Nike, Hewlett-Packart, the Gap and Seventh Generation, a company in Burlington, Vermont. The Ceres-ACCA North American awards program, now in its fifth year, seeks to highlight best practices in reporting on sustainability issues by North American companies and other organizations, and to provide guidance to other groups and companies that are publishing or intend to publish sustainability or corporate social responsibility reports.
