Tar Ponds cleanup panel hearings set to start April 29
SYDNEY, NS-The Joint Review Panel for the Sydney Tar Ponds and coke ovens remediation project will begin a series of public hearings on April 29, 2006. The hearings will take place at the Victoria Park Armouries in Sydney over a 21-day period, concluding on May 19. This will be the last opportunity for the public to provide input on the environmental assessment of the project before the panel submits its findings to federal and provincial Environment Ministers, said panel chair Lesley Griffiths. Groups or individuals interested in making a presentation should contact the panel's office in Sydney to pre-register in order to secure a date and time. Presentations by government departments and agencies will be heard during the first week of hearings. Other interested parties will present through the remainder of the hearing schedule. The panel will reserve time between presentations to ask questions and allow others in attendance to do the same. The last two days of the hearing period are reserved for presenters with closing remarks. The panel is scheduled to complete its report by June 30. More information, including operational procedures to guide those interested in making presentations, is available on the panel's Web site, www.stpco-review.ca or from Debbie Hendriksen, 902/577-5357.
