Terms of reference approved for long-term waste management EA study
TORONTO-The Ontario Environment Minister Laurel Broten has approved terms of reference drafted by the regional municipalities of Durham and York for a study which will serve as the basis for a 35-year waste management plan. The terms of reference will serve as a work plan for an environmental assessment (EA) to look at a number of options for dealing with their wastes. The goal of the Durham/York Residual Waste Study will be to develop locally-based strategies for handling waste now being shipped to Michigan. The EA will consider a range of processing technologies and treatments, including the latest thermal technologies, to identify a preferred system for managing wastes that remain after diversion. "The Residual Waste Study allows us to continue building upon the programs which complement our waste diversion strategy, including the new Green Bin program being launched in Pickering, Ajax, Whitby and Oshawa," said said Durham regional chair Roger Anderson.
