Quebec liquor board unveils reusable cotton bags for its products

MONTREAL, QUE-Under the theme "Think green for your reds and whites," Quebec's liquor board (the Société des alcools du Québec (SAQ), a crown corporation responsible for the trade of alcoholic beverages) has introduced its reusable cotton bags for carrying bottles of wine and spirits. The sturdy bags, which can hold up to four bottles, are divided into compartments to keep the bottles from banging together. SAQ customers can buy them for $2.25, fifty cents of which will go to the Biodiversity and Wildlife Habitat Fund created by the Quebec Wildlife Foundation. The Foundation will direct all funds received through its collaboration with the SAQ toward the preservation of species at risk in Quebec. The SAQ estimates that adoption of the cotton bags will reduce by 20% both the number of plastic bags it uses and the number of paper bags used to protect bottles. In another "green" initiative, the SAQ last year became the first major retail firm in Quebec to use bags made from recyclable, biodegradable plastic.
