UPM-Kymmene seeks renewal of air quality permit for Miramichi mill
FREDERICTON, NB-The New Brunswick Department of Environment has begun a 180-day review process for UPM-Kymmene Miramichi's application to renew the air quality operating approval for its paper mill complex in Miramichi. The current permit for the facility, designated a Class 1 source of emissions under the provincial Clean Air Act, expires September 30, 2006. UPM-Kymmene produces lightweight coated paper at the Miramichi complex. The public participation regulation under the Act mandates a public participation process prior to the issuing or renewal of an operating approval for Class 1 emission sources. The process covers relevant air quality-related issues, including questions or comments regarding air emissions, pollution control equipment, conditions proposed in the draft approval, monitoring and reporting requirements, and enforcement and compliance information. It includes a 120-day public comment period which began March 7 and will run to July 5, 2006. More information, including background documentation and details on how to submit comments during the public review process is available on the Environment Department Web site, www.gnb.ca/0009/0355/0005/, or through any of the department's offices.
