Nominations open for second annual Green Toronto awards
TORONTO, ONT-The city of Toronto is inviting nominations for the second annual Green Toronto awards, its Environmental Awards of Excellence. The awards recognize the efforts of companies, community groups and individuals to contribute to the greening of Toronto. To be eligible, nominated projects, initiatives, individuals or companies must operate or reside within the city of Toronto and must have been in progress during 2005. Elected officials, city of Toronto staff and previous Green Toronto award winners are not eligible. The deadline for nominations, including supporting materials, is Friday, February 24 at 5 p.m. Nine awards will be presented in the categories of community projects, energy conservation, environmental awareness, green design, health, leadership, market transformation, water efficiency and youth. Among the corporate sponsors are Loblaw Companies, Toronto Hydro, Roots, Ace Bakery, and Toronto's water department. Three award recipients will be selected by a panel of judges in each of the nine categories. Nine of these 27 recipients will also receive a Green Toronto Award and $5,000 to donate to the environmental organization of their choice. All winners will be honoured at a public reception hosted by the city on Tuesday, May 2 at Toronto City Hall. More information is available on Toronto's Web site, www.toronto.ca.
