Wastewater release leads to charge for Imperial Oil
EDMONTON, ALTA-Imperial Oil Limited has been charged under Alberta's Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act with violating its environmental operating approval, following a February 2004 release of industrial wastewater from the company's Strathcona refinery into the surrounding watershed. The company has also been charged with failing to immediately report the release. The charges stem from an investigation by Alberta Environment into a hydrocarbon sheen on the North Saskatchewan River. The investigation determined the cause of the sheen to be a release of wastewater from the Strathcona facility. A court date has been set for February 9, 2006 in Fort Saskatchewan Provincial Court. The maximum penalty for each offence is $500,000.
