Adaptation attracts growing interest

A smaller number of side events presented adaptation case studies, most of these projects carried out in developing countries. These case studies illustrated the need to take advantage of the local economy base and make it sustainable, and to make climate change adaptation an integral component of development policy.

Discussions also focused on the links between adaptation, the alleviation of poverty and the status of least developed countries' national action programs for adaptation. This raised the issue of the need for funding for adaptation projects.

Such funding is beginning to flow through the Special Climate Change Fund (SCCF), the Least Developed Countries Fund (LDCF) and the Strategic Priority on Adaptation Trust Fund, all of which are administered by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the Convention body responsible for administering the funds.

Adaptation commanded some measure of attention even in side events not specifically dealing with this aspect of climate change, signaling its emergence as a mainstream issue.
