$50K Green Municipal Fund grant supports Marathon wind power feasibility study

MARATHON, ONT-The town of Marathon is receiving a $50,000 Green Municipal Fund grant to explore the feasibility of developing, constructing and commissioning a mid-sized (20 to 50 megawatts) renewable wind energy farm along the coast of Lake Superior, within the town limits. A 12-month on-site wind monitoring program will be conducted at a minimum height of 60 metres to confirm an earlier wind resource assessment. If the results are favourable, a business case will be prepared and engineering work completed. Marathon mayor Dave Bell said, "It is estimated that the proposed wind farm could provide an approximate annual reduction of 24,000 to 56,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide, 96 to 224 tonnes of nitrous oxide and 28 to 64 tonnes of sulfur dioxide per year over the existing generation mix."
