PEI communities benefit from first infrastructure fund grants
CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI-The first round of project grants under the Canada-Prince Edward Island Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (MRIF) will provide more than $14.6 million to support a total of 34 projects. In accordance with the MRIF's assignment of priority to "green" projects, more than 40% of the federal and provincial funding will support projects to ensure effective wastewater management and safe drinking water, as well as environmental energy improvements. Between 2005 and 2012, more than $54 million will be invested through the MRIF, with contributions coming from the federal and PEI governments, as well as local governments and organizations. The Canada-Prince Edward Island MRIF is administered by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and the PEI Department of Community and Cultural Affairs. The Federation of PEI Municipalities is represented on the program's management committee.
