NB Power invites Expressions of Interest for wind energy

FREDERICTON, NB-New Brunswick Power has called for Expressions of Interest for wind-powered generation. Developers are being invited to submit plans to develop, own and operate up to 400 MW of wind powered electricity for purchase by NB Power. Submissions are due by December 16, 2005. Energy Minister Bruce Fitch said the wind energy proposal fits well into the province's Renewable Portfolio Standard, which calls for 33% of New Brunswick's energy supply to come from renewable sources by 2016. Five regions are currently being proposed for wind development: Bay of Fundy, Tantramar, Miramichi Bay, Acadie-Chaleur and inland New Brunswick. Situating wind towers in different regions will increase efficiency potential, in that if it is not windy enough in one region of the province to produce electricity on a given day, it may be sufficiently windy in another region to produce electricity. NB Power hopes to announce the successful proponent or proponents and complete negotiations by the spring of 2006. More information is available from Pam McKay at NB Power, 506/458-3777.
