Lack of due diligence costs company $48K
GODERICH, ONT-A Goderich company, Drennan Refrigeration, was fined $48,000 and levied a victim fine surcharge after being found guilty of a charge under the Ontario Water Resources Act (OWRA). In June 2002, Ontario Ministry of Environment staff were called to investigate a complaint of dead fish in the Wilson drain, in the village of Huron Park, near Goderich. It was determined that the company, hired to do repair work on the ice plant at the Huron Park, failed to exercise due diligence at the time of the repair work. This resulted in a discharge of ammonia to a storm drain on the property. Drennan Refrigeration was charged with, and subsequently convicted of discharging a material that may impair water, contrary to section 30(1) of the OWRA.
