New BC groundwater protection rules now in effect
VICTORIA, BC-British Columbia's new groundwater protection regulation has come into full effect as of November 1, 2005. As part of the province's Action Plan for Safe Drinking Water, the regulation sets standards to ensure that wells are properly drilled, sealed, maintained and closed. All new water supply wells must have a surface seal (to prevent contaminated surface water from entering the well), a secure well cap and a well identification plate. There must be at least one foot betwen the top of the well casing and the ground surface, and grading must ensure that surface water drains away from the wellhead. Other provisions of the regulation require that well construction and pump installation be done only by qualified persons.
