Used oil leak results in $25K penalty forwaste handling firm
CALGARY, ALTA-AAA Petroleum Contracting was ordered to pay $25,000 after pleading guilty a charge under Alberta's Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act of improperly disposing of hazardous waste. The company was charged following an investigation of an incident in May 2002. AAA Petroleum had parked a trailer with a 500-gallon tank containing used oil on a city road adjacent to Nose Creek in north-central Calgary. The used oil leaked out of the tank and entered Nose Creek. The $25,000 penalty includes a fine of $10,000. Under a creative sentencing provision, the remaining $15,000 will be used to fund the Nose Creek Endowment Award, to be awarded annually on the basis of financial need to a student entering the second year of the Environmental Technology Program at SAIT Polytechnic in Calgary.
