Gowlings introduces Sustainable Urban Solutions program

OTTAWA, ONT-Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP (Gowlings) has launched a national streamlined legal and advisory service intended to facilitate responsible, sustainable urban growth and development. Sustainable Urban Solutions is the first program of its kind in Canada, connecting municipalities, lenders and private project partners with funding opportunities associated with environmental improvement, infrastructure and sustainable development. It will combine the expertise of four of Gowlings' key practice groups: municipal; environmental; energy and infrastructure; and government regulations and regulatory affairs. The Sustainable Urban Solutions program will help municipalities create flexible urban infrastructures that preserve environmental resources while accommodating continuing fiscal, social and cultural changes. It will advisory services on strategies for urban development, brownfield redevelopment, heritage preservation and redevelopment, tax increment financing, alternative finance procurement and options for infrastructure financing. "Municipalities need to turn the opportunities available for implementing environmentally smart infrastructure solutions into reality," said Harry Dahme, a partner in Gowlings' environmental, real estate and urban development national practice group. "With our understanding of complex infrastructure and environmental issues, Gowlings can be a driving force in building smart communities for the future." Bob Onyschuk, also a partner in the same group, said, "The solution to creating livable communities will come through municipal projects that benefit from innovative financing, whether from the public or private sector. The role of Gowlings' Sustainable Urban Solutions is to facilitate that process by creating workable alliances that close the funding gap between public and private sectors."
