Farm owner fined for improper use of pesticide
CALGARY, ALTA-Patrick Fabian, owner of Fabian Seed Farms, was fined $3,450 on Wednesday, after pleading guilty to a charge of improperly using a pesticide. He was also ordered by the provincial court to pay an additional $2,700 to compensate Alberta Environment for the cost of providing expert evidence and analyzing samples. In May 2003, Fabian placed the pesticide "Touchdown," which is not approved for aerial application, into pesticide containers labeled "Poast," which is approved for aerial application. The containers were then provided to an aerial sprayer for use on cropland leased by Fabian Seed Farms near Tilley, Alberta. Alberta Environment charged Fabian after investigating a complaint about the pesticide drifting onto a neighboring crop.
