NB Power to issue EOI for wind energy project proposals
FREDERICTON, NB-New Brunswick Power's distribution and customer service plans to issue an Expression of Interest (EOI) this summer for wind energy proposals. The company has stated its intention to purchase up to 400 megawatts (MW) of wind energy from private-sector producers throughout New Brunswick by 2016. The EOI will ask developers to submit plans to develop, own and operate wind-powered generation for purchase by NB Power. The utility will specifically be looking for wind energy projects which are EcoLogo(tm)-certified and geographically dispersed in high-wind areas throughout the province. These areas include: the Bay of Fundy, Tantramar, Miramichi Bay, Acadie/Chaleur, and inland New Brunswick. The five locations have been assessed as the highest wind areas in the province and will allow NB Power to combine the wind energy from a number of sites, thus decreasing the variability in wind energy produced from a single site. NB Power has committed to providing an additional 10% of its supply from renewable energy sources and already has a 20-year power purchase agreement for a 20-MW wind farm at Dark Harbour, on the west coast of Grand Manan.
