Albertans invited to review draft standard for forest management plans
EDMONTON, ALTA-Alberta Sustainable Resource Development (SRD) has revised the standards that set out requirements for forest management plans prepared by forest industry companies working on public land in Alberta. The updated Forest Management Planning Standard includes clear and measurable performance expectations for forest companies, requirements for meaningful public participation, measures to safeguard biodiversity resources and a streamlined planning process. The revised standard also adopts the internationally accepted Canadian Standards Association (CSA) model as the baseline for sustainable forest management planning. As part of finalizing the updated standard, SRD is inviting comments, with written submissions due by September 15, 2005. The draft standard may be viewed on the department's Web site, www3.gov.ab.ca/srd/forests/managing/index.html. Public comments will be reviewed during September, with the final version to be released later this fall. The last revision was done in 1998, when the Interim Forest Management Planning Manual was adopted.
