BC grants EA certificate to rapid transit project

VICTORIA, BC-The British Columbia government has granted an environmental assessment (EA) certificate for the Richmond Airport-Vancouver (RAV) rapid transit project. The EA reviewed the project's potential air quality and noise impacts, as well as effects on fisheries and aquatic habitat, contaminated soils, landscapes and the impact of cut-and-cover tunnel construction. "To mitigate the short-term effects associated with the project, RAVCo must comply with all the commitments and assurances developed during the environmental assessment process," said Sustainable Resource Management Minister George Abbott. "There are more than two dozen of these binding commitments and assurances to address First Nations' interests and ensure the project has no residual advers environmental, economic, social, heritage or health effects," he added. SNC Lavalin/Serco has been chosen to design, build, operate and maintain the 19.5-kilometre electric rail rapid transit line which will connect central Richmond, Vancouver International Airport and downtown Vancouver, with 17 stations.
