Mail order firm opts for EarthChoice to produce catalogue

Norm Thompson Outfitters, a Montreal mail order company, has announced that it will no longer be printing its Sahalie catalogue on offset paper, but is switching to Domtar's EarthChoice for both the catalogue and all related order forms. This will make the Sahalie catalogue one of the first in North America to be printed on paper made of fibre from forests certified to the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) standards.

Norm Thompson is widely recognized as a pioneer among mail order firms for its support of environmental causes. The company aligned itself with the U.S. Environmental Defense Fund in the late 1990s and has actively worked to increase the recycled paper content in its catalogues. Its partnership with Domtar is the second phase it its strategy to achieve this goal.

Meanwhile, Domtar is challenging all corporations, graphic designers, commercial printers and other users of communication, image and publication papers to choose products that come from responsibly managed forests. In December 2005, Domtar will publicly recognize those companies that have declared their Earth choice by ordering or specifying EarthChoice papers between April 22 and November 30, 2005.

Each of the 13 papers in the EarthChoice line contains virgin fibre from forests certified to the Forest Stewardship Council's stringent forest management standards. Domtar is also assessing all its forestlands to ensure that no endangered forests are harvested. Moreover, most of the product line contains as much as 30% post-consumer recycled paper as well.

"We are doing our part and now we are challenging socially and environmentally responsible, brand-conscious companies to join us in doing the right thing for North American forests," said William George, Domtar's vice-president of marketing.

At the same time, the company has addressed concerns about quality, choice, availability and price. The EarthChoice product line includes 13 high-quality, cost-effective uncoated and coated papers suitable for use in prestigious print materials such as annual reports, corporate identity packages, promotional materials, business forms, direct mail, newsletters, catalogues, magazines, book covers, presentation folders, calendars, envelopes, labels and business cards. Domtar has also committed to extend the line with additional products for other business applications.

The product line has earned the support of a number of leading environmental organizations, including World Wildlife Fund-Canada and ForestEthics, while Rainforest Alliance has endorsed the forest management practices used to make EarthChoice papers.
