MOE issues orders to Imperial Oil, Royal Polymers, Dow Chemical
SARNIA, ONT-Ontario's environmental SWAT team has ordered three Sarnia facilities to come into compliance with Ontario's environmental laws. Provincial officer orders were issued last week to Imperial Oil, Royal Polymers and Dow Chemical Canada. Each facility's order includes requirements to obtain or come into compliance with certificates of approval for air emissions, waste disposal site operations and sewage discharge, maintenance of monitoring wells, and to properly register as generators of liquid industrial or hazardous wastes. The orders also include schedules and deadlines for completing activities to restore compliance. To date, the team has issued 32 provincial officer orders to 34 facilities in the Sarnia area following an inspection sweep which began in February 2004 when Environment Minister Leona Dombrowsky deployed the team to inspect industrial facilities and gather information on how spills and improper air emissions can be prevented in the future. Having completed its field work in Sarnia in January 2005, the SWAT team is now reviewing, analyzing and summarizing its findings from the inspection sweep and will complete a public report in the coming weeks.
