Hillside Poultry ordered to follow environmental rules
GRANDE PRAIRIE, ALTA-Hillside Poultry Farms, in Grande Prairie, has been ordered to submit overdue wastewater monitoring reports to the provincial government and to take other steps to comply with its environmental approval. A provincial enforcement order issued February 4 also requires the company to: comply with its continuous, monthly and annual wastewater sampling obligations; submit annual wastewater summary reports dating back to 2001; submit a proposal for the future operation of its industrial wastewater control system and feather landfill; and properly dispose of all plastic and non-inert waste at an approved waste management facility, and keep disposal records. The enforcement order was issued following a routine inspection by Alberta Environment, which noted that previous attempts to ensure compliance have been unsuccessful. If the terms of the order are not met, further enforcement action can be initiated. Issued under the authority of Alberta's Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act and the Water Act, enforcement orders are intended to remedy a number of environmental problems involving regulatory infractions, including the failure to meet approval conditions.
