New editions of ISO 14001, 14004 standards, practical guidebook now available from CSA

The Canadian Standards Association (CSA) is now making available the new editions of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) ISO 14001 and ISO 14004 standards. These latest editions of the standards are designed to be less complex than previous editions and are written in an easy-to-understand manner, making them simpler to implement by small to medium-sized organizations.

They have also been written in such a way as to be more compatible with the provisions of the ISO 9001:2000 standard, which specifies requirements for a Quality Management System. This increased compatibility is designed to make it easier for organizations wishing to incorporate both the Quality and Environmental Management System standards.

The ISO 14001:2004 standard specifies requirements for an environmental management system (EMS) and is intended to apply to all types and sizes of organizations. The ISO 14004:2004 standard provides guidance on the elements of an EMS, its implementation, and the principal issues involved.

The CSA is also offering PLUS 14000-The ISO 14000 Essentials, Second Edition. This practical handbook provides concise guidance for establishing and implementing the requirements of the newly revised ISO 14001. The new edition of PLUS 14000 describes the key changes in ISO 14001:2004, including guidance from CSA's Technical Committee on Environmental Management Systems.

The ISO 14000 family of standards was developed by environmental experts from around the world under the auspices of the ISO Technical Committee 207. The CSA holds the committee Secretariat on behalf of Canada's member body in ISO, the Standards Council of Canada.
