BC, Nature Trust, Weyerhaeuser commit funds to expand MacMillan Provincial Park

VICTORIA, BC-In a groundbreaking agreement, The British Columbia government, The Nature Trust of British Columbia and Weyerhaeuser have together committed a total of $5.5 million to expand MacMillan Provincial Park by 140 hectares, nearly doubling its size. BC will invest $2 million, The Nature Trust has committed to raising $500,000 and Weyerhaeuser will make an eco-gift valued at about $3 million. The Nature Trust will undertake a fundraising campaign which will include corporate and private donations, in addition to soliciting public support. The new addition increases the park's size from 157 to 280 hectares and builds on the 60-year legacy of HR MacMillan's original donation, made in 1944 to conserve an example of old-growth forest, including Cathedral Grove, a unique stand of giant Douglas fir trees, some of which are 800 years old.
