Ont Clean Water Agency fined $12K for failing to notify MOE of water quality incidents
GODERICH, ONT-The Ontario Clean Water Agency (OCWA) was fined a total of $12,000, plus victim fine surcharges, after pleading guilty to two charges of non-compliance with the Ontario Water Resources Act (OWRA). The charges related to its operation of the Huron Park waterworks, under contract to the municipality of South Huron, owner of the facility. During a routine inspection of the waterworks in October 2002, Ministry of Environment (MOE) staff found that two breaches of Ontario regulation 459/00 under the act had occurred during the operation of the system. A broader investigation revealed that the OCWA had failed to provide the required written notification related to adverse water quality event and had failed to take necessary corrective action related to a second adverse water quality event.
