Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP (Gowlings) recently marked partner David Estrin's 30th anniversary in private practice as an environmental law specialist. Today one of Canada's leading environmental lawyers, Estrin was a pioneer in this field, having begun his career as a sole practitioner when environmental law was new to Canadian jurisprudence. "As one of the first environmental lawyers in Canada, David has helped define environmental law as we know it today. He brings a wealth of experience and wisdom to our national Environmental Practice Group," said Scott Jolliffe, Gowlings' National Managing Partner."
During his career, Estrin has held various teaching positions, has written numerous authoritative books and articles on environmental law and has played a key role in policy development and drafting of landmark environmental legislation, including the Ontario Environmental Assessment Act and Ontario Environmental Bill of Rights. Estrin was a founding director and first General Counsel of the Canadian Environmental Law Association and the founding editor of Canadian Environmental Law Reports.
In honour of his contribution to environmental law, the National Environment, Energy and Resources Law Section of the Canadian Bar Association (CBA) is establishing an essay contest to recognize the best essay by a law school student on an environmental, energy or natural resources law topic.
