BC grants EA permit for Wolverine mining development
VANCOUVER, BC-Western Canadian Coal has received an Environmental Assessment (EA) certificate from the British Columbia government for its Wolverine group of coal properties near Tumbler Ridge in northeast BC. The provincial EA Office determined that the mine project is safe to proceed, the proposal having adequately addressed environmental, health, First Nations and socio-economic issues. The company plans to spend $116 million to get the Wolverine coal mine operational by late 2005. The proposal includes the construction, operation and eventual decommissioning of the mine, 25 km west of Tumbler Ridge near the Wolverine River. It will produce 1.6 million tonnes of clean metallurgical coal per annum on the Perry Creek and EB open-pit properties over a projected 11-year period.
