Guelph fined for using unapproved hauler for STP waste
GUELPH, ONT-The city of Guelph recently pleaded guilty to a charge under section 41 of the Environmental Protection Act and was fined $6,000 plus a victim fine surcharge. The offence related to the use of an unapproved hauler to transport waste sludge from the city-operated sewage treatment plant on Wellington Street, in Guelph, to landfill. The charge was laid after a Ministry of Environment inspection of the plant in August 2002 found that the waste was being transported by an unapproved hauler. Upon being made aware of the contravention of the Act, the city immediately began using the services of an approved hauler. The city was given 30 days to pay the fine.
