Firm fined $20K for improper labelling of hazardous waste

EDMONTON, ALTA-Magna Engineering Calgary IV was fined $20,125 after pleading guilty to one charge of improperly labelling hazardous waste, in contravention of Alberta's Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act. In July 2001, after an electrical transformer on the roof of South Centre Mall in Calgary overheated, Magna Engineering stored four unlabelled barrels containing approximately 270 litres of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) within a secondary containment area on the roof of the mall. The barrels were discovered in August 2001 after another, separate transformer overheated.
