Irving Pulp and Paper levied $30K penalty for untreated effluent spill

SAINT JOHN, NB-Irving Pulp and Paper recently pleaded guilty today to a violation of the federal Fisheries Act, in connection with a release of untreated paper mill effluent into Little River in Saint John in December 2002. The incident occurred during a test of a back-up generator. The provincial court levied a penalty of $30,000, which includes a $2,500 fine to be paid to the court, $22,500 to be directed to support environmental research by the University of New Brunswick's biology department and $5,000 to be paid to the Government of Canada's Environmental Damages Fund, administered by Environment Canada.
