Waste Management to build new landfill for West Hants, NS

WEST HANTS, NS-Waste Management and the municipality of West Hants have finalized a partnership for the development and operation of a new second-generation landfill site. Waste Management (WM) will build the new facility in strict accordance with provincial environmental regulations, spending more than $25 million on capital investments in the operation over the 25-year term of the contract. Requirements for second-generation landfills include a double liner system and comprehensive management systems for groundwater, surface water and landfill gas. The Nova Scotia Department of Environment and Labour has granted construction approval for the new landfill which, from a geological perspective, is considered to be in an excellent location. Operation is expected to begin on January 2, 2006, with the new landfill accepting approximately 46,000 tonnes of non-hazardous solid waste per year. WM currently provides solid waste collection services to 56,000 residential customers and more than 3,000 commercial customers within the Halifax Regional Municipality and the communities within Pictou and Cumberland counties.
