Purchase adds land to protected habitat in the Okanagan Valley

OLIVER, BC-The acquisition of a parcel of land on the Okanagan River 12 kilometres south of Oliver has added more than 16 hectares to a critical wetland habitat area of significant environmental value to the Okanagan Valley. The purchase of the land by the BC government was funded through the two-year, $4-million Environmental Enhancement Fund, created under an agreement between the ministries of Water, Land and Air Protection and of Transportation. The property is adjacent to three other protected properties and is close to the South Okanagan Wildlife Management Area; these five properties together comprise almost 305 hectares of contiguous floodplain habitat, affording protection for numerous types of waterfowl and other species of concern. Ducks Unlimited, which already manages a neighbouring 26-hectare property, will hold title to the latest acquisition and will be responsible for its restoration and management.
