Nfld directs $1.5M in new funds to St Anthony site cleanup
ST JOHN'S, NFLD&LAB-In its 2004-05 budget, the Newfoundland and Labrador government has allocated an additional $1.5 million for further cleanup work at the former military site in St Anthony. Environment and Conservation Minister Tom Osborne explained that while remediation at the St Anthony site was carried out by the department previously, results from work done in the past year indicate the need for further cleanup work. He said a plan now being developed will detail the type of work to be carried out at the site to deal with soil contaminated by PCB, hydrocarbons and metals. "The project will commence this year; however, we are still in the process of identifying the exact work that will be carried out. We hope to finalize this information soon," Osborne added.
