BC to spend $7M to protect, restore rivers, waterways

VANCOUVER, BC-The British Columbia government will spend $7 million over the next five years on research and projects to protect and restore the province's rivers, waterways and watersheds, including vital fish habitat. The Living Rivers initiative, announced by Water, Land and Air Protection Minister Bill Barisoff, includes $5 million in new funding, along with a $2-million fund established by the province in 2002. In addition to providing support for specific enhancement, research and restoration projects, the funding will be used to improve understanding of BC's watersheds, encourage sustainable water use and increase public awareness.
