Federal negotiator named to lead final round of Sydney Tar Pond discussions
OTTAWA, ONT-The federal government has appointed Alphonse Cormier, assistant Deputy Minister for Public Works and Government Services Canada's real property branch, to lead the final round of negotiations with the province of Nova Scotia to finalize a bilateral agreement on the cleanup of the Sydney Tar Ponds. "Our appointment of Mr Cormier, who has extensive management and negotiating experience and an excellent relationship with the province, demonstrates that we are committed to getting the Sydney Tar Ponds site remediated as soon as possible," said Public Works and Government Services Minister Stephen Owen. The federal government is confident that sufficient preparation has been done by Sydney residents, along with the provincial and federal governments. "We look forward to reaching an agreement on cost-sharing and related issues that will allow the process for the cleanup of the Sydney Tar Ponds to move forward," said Environment Minister David Anderson.
